The Lamp Doctor is In!!
Repair and Restoration Services
Concord Lamp & Shade has a well established reputation for high quality lamp repair and restoration services. For over 30 years, we have repaired, rewired, and rebuilt all types of lamps including modern lamps, antique lamps, chandeliers, ceiling and wall fixtures as well as electrified oil lamps. In addition, we are qualified to convert lamps and other lighting fixtures aquired outside of the U.S., making them compatible with standard U.S. outlets and electrical requirements.
We use UL certified parts in our lamp repairs and restoration. All of our work is done on the premises and typical turn around time is one week or less.
Creating New Lamps from Old, but Treasured Objects......
One important and unique component of our service is converting all types of objects into lamps. We have created beautiful and memorable lamps from, among other things, antique vases (wood, metal, crystal or porcelain) and oil lamps, silver (and other) candlesticks, copper fire extinguishers and oil burning torches, wood carvings, musical instruments, golf clubs and other sporting items, painted tins, baskets, champagne and other “special” liquor bottles, milk bottles and books.
We will work with you to design your new lamp, selecting from a wide range of UL certified lamp parts. When the lamp is completed, we will also work with you to select an appropriate shade and fit the shade to your new lamp.
Did you know that...........
- The standard light socket will accomodate upto 250watts. The primary determinate of the wattage you can safely use in your lamp is not the socket, but instead the size of the opening at the top of the lamp shade used on the lamp. Standard incandescent light bulbs create heat; and the larger the bulb, the more heat will be created. Because heat rises, the opening at the top of the shade becomes very important in determining how large a bulb you can use. The smaller the opening at the top of the lamp shade, the smaller the bulb you should use in your lamp; conversely, the larger the opening at the top of the lamp shade, the larger the bulb you can use.
One of the better recognized applications of this phenomen is with the standard “6-candle” floor lamps (one three way bulb, and three “candles” / light sockets surrounding the center - and largest - socket). The floor lamp shades that were designed for these standing lamps have a very large opening at the top, and sufficient diameter to allow a safe distance between the three “candles” and the side of the lamp shade.
The maximum recommended watts to use based on the diameter of the opening at the top of the lamp shade are as follows:

- Wattage is not a measurement of light output. Instead, it is the measurement of electricity usage.
- ‘Lumens’ is the measurement of the brightness of the bulb - or light output.
- A 3-way light bulb has two filaments. When used with appropriately with a three-way socket, the first click will trigger the smaller filament, creating the lower light level. The second click will turn off the smaller filament and will trigger the larger filament creating a higher light level. The third click will trigger both filaments, creating the highest light level.
- 3-way light bulbs will burn out faster because the alternating heating and cooling of the two metal filaments shortens their lifespan.
